Driver CPC Training

The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) is a qualification for professional bus, coach, and lorry drivers. It was introduced in the European Union (EU) to improve road safety and ensure that professional drivers have the necessary skills and knowledge. While the UK has left the EU, as of my last knowledge update in January 2022, the Driver CPC remains relevant in the UK. Keep in mind that regulations may have evolved since then.

Mandatory Training

Professional drivers are required to complete 35 hours of periodic training every five years to maintain their Driver CPC qualification. This training is designed to enhance and update drivers' skills, focusing on areas such as road safety, vehicle operation, and regulations.

Topics Covered

Driver CPC training covers a range of topics relevant to the safe and efficient operation of commercial vehicles. Common subjects include vehicle maintenance, road safety, eco-driving, health and safety, and customer service.

Training Providers

Approved training centres and providers offer Driver CPC courses. It's essential to choose accredited providers to ensure that the training meets the required standards.

Delivery Formats

Driver CPC training can be delivered through classroom-based sessions, e-learning modules, or a combination of both. The flexibility in delivery formats allows drivers to choose options that best suit their schedules and learning preferences.

Record Keeping

Drivers are responsible for keeping track of their training hours and ensuring they complete the required 35 hours within the five-year cycle. Training centres typically issue a Driver Qualification Card (DQC) as evidence of completed training.

Penalties for Non-Compliance

Failure to complete the required CPC training within the specified timeframe can result in penalties, including fines and the suspension of the driver's ability to operate commercially.

Exemptions

Some drivers may be exempt from the Driver CPC requirements, such as those driving vehicles under certain weight limits, or in certain specific circumstances.

International Recognition

The Driver CPC is recognised across EU member states, and drivers holding a valid CPC qualification can work internationally within the EU.

Continuous Professional Development

Driver CPC encourages drivers to engage in continuous professional development, staying updated on industry best practices and regulatory changes.

It's crucial for professional drivers and fleet operators to stay informed about the current regulations and requirements for Driver CPC training in their respective regions. Compliance with these regulations is essential for maintaining a safe and skilled workforce in the transportation industry.
